Lightweave Miami, FL 2020
Commissioned by Codina Partners

A pair of interwoven archway structures spans the Paseo at the heart of Downtown Doral, transforming a central pedestrian route into a sequence of spatial thresholds and a pedestrian-scale instrument activated by movement, light, and sound. Situated between commercial, civic, and residential spaces, the installation turns everyday circulation into an experiential passage.

Lightweave takes shape as a stainless-steel framework animated by light and motion. A rhythmic procession of arches forms a corridor that subtly shifts in orientation and scale as visitors pass beneath it. By rotating and linking alternating vertical columns, the structure operates as a single, stable system while introducing variation from one threshold to the next. The ascending A-frame geometry gently recalibrates perspective as the Paseo transitions from the downtown core toward residential zones.

Steel tension cables woven through the framework introduce volume without enclosure. Clad in powder-coated aluminum tubes, the elements generate layered spatial and optical effects. Color shifts along the length of the installation allow the structure to read as a spectrum rather than a fixed object. In strong sunlight, crosshatched shadows of structure and cables trace light and geometry across the walkway.

From oblique views, overlapping tubes create moiré patterns that intermingle with the surrounding palms. Through alignment and repetition, the tensioned elements imply curvature, allowing the structure to feel both lightweight and resilient—an open system shaped by the forces acting upon it.

At night, environmental sound activates programmable LEDs and a spatial audio system embedded within the arches. Pulses of light and cascading tones travel through the sequence with slight delays, turning the corridor into a playable instrument. Through repetition, interaction, and environmental responsiveness, Lightweave becomes a living passage shaped by the movement, rhythm, and presence of the people who pass through it.
