SOFTlab created four of seven new permanent interactive installations that unfold across the visitor journey at Edge, each offering a different way to experience, view, and perceive the city. Distributed from the entry and queue to the observation deck on Level 100, the works use light, reflection, sound, movement, and interaction to transform the relationship between visitors, the architecture, and the constantly changing city beyond.

Beginning in the queue, Pulse transforms a field of 450 suspended translucent globes into a responsive landscape of light and sound. Visitor movement generates ripples that travel across the installation, making the collective movement of the crowd visible. On Level 100, Infinity Field uses mirrored chambers to extend views outward and inward, multiplying gradients, waves of light, visitors, and the city into seemingly endless fields.

Crystal Horizon filters views of the skyline through crystalline forms clad in dichroic material, refracting light and shifting color as visitors move around them. Nearby, Reflections combines more than 250 mirrored elements across the floor and ceiling. Suspended mirrors respond to visitors while capturing fragmented views of people, architecture, sky, and skyline, continuously recomposing the city through movement and reflection.

A shared digital system connects the four installations. Ambient gradients establish an evolving background while animation, sound, and visitor-triggered behaviors introduce additional layers of activity. Each work responds differently to its location and scale while drawing from a common visual and behavioral language, allowing light, color, motion, and sound to reappear in different forms throughout the journey.

The installations evolve alongside the city itself. During the day, sunlight amplifies reflection, translucency, and shifting fields of color; around sunset and into night, programmed light, movement, and sound become increasingly pronounced. Together, the four works create different lenses through which to encounter New York—transforming the view from something simply observed into an experience shaped by perception, movement, and participation.
